I tested Simple Quest under Xubuntu linux using wine. I set wine up using winecfg for Windows 7. When set for 10 the window just went white and didn't display anything. Set for Windows 7 wine displayed the game menu.

Maybe it was the fact that I'm playing the game under wine, but ENTER didn't work as an enter key, SPACE bar was enter for me.

The first time I played I died at the monster castle to the left. The second time playing I managed to get to level 5 but was defeated by the cultist leader.

I really wish the Options menu at least let you see keybindings, it seemed to me there was no way to see what was equipped, nor a way to switch weapons. I bought a sword and shield, but not even sure they were being used.

Still, love the graphics, and the game is quite fun. Has this been developed more elsewhere?

Thought it might be interesting to hear how it behaved with a compatibility layer in between.

Hi, thanks for checking it out! I haven't really touched the game in a while now, if I ever do go back to it, key rebinding is definitely the big thing I need to add. It sounds like you might not have found the menu -- did you hit ESC? That should let you change your equipment, use items outside of combat, and save. I actually thought I at least listed that on this page but I see I didn't... I should at least fix that.

Hello there Kildorf, every so often I stop by the verge site either to download something I need :)  but also always hoping verge is still being worked on. I will always love verge, I think we are all going to have a place in our hearts for whatever ide and or programming language we learn to code.

So I am must say I'm very happy to see your update. ^o^ Downloading now...

Ill just throw this out there -- anyone using Unity atm?  I'd love to marry verge to Unity -... cheers

Zonker! Glad to hear from you. :) Verge was definitely on my mind pretty constantly while working on SimpleQuest (and, while I continue to work on the Next Thing).  I can't say I miss everything about VergeC ;) but I definitely miss a lot about the engine and everything around it. I miss having that community around and active. When did we get so old?

I've used Unity a little and I can't say it's my favourite, but some people have done some pretty awesome things with it. It could definitely do a 2d tile engine... (before I switched to the web-based stuff I was actually starting to build SimpleQuest in Unity).

I'm studying Game Design and we have to use Unity and it's pretty good for 2DGames. Tilemaps is a great way to create your map pretty fast and the alpha version of the new unity version even has 2D Light.... and c# is an easy language.

Godot is a complete free alternative and made a huge leap forward last year. It use an own python like language, very easy to understand and you can create 2D and 3D games.

Hello my old friend :) (Not sure if you remember me, but I was an old verger from days past) I just so happened to find this by randomly logging into twitter tonight and seeing something on Grue's feed.

I was very much enjoying this, but unfortunately encountered a bug. I saved in Lord Danger's Room after figuring out the first pattern, I missed the second pattern and tried to reload, and I may have broken it by doing so. Now whenever I try to load, it will load the map, but it won't load Hero and just freezes (though the music keeps playing).

My only real feedback I'd like to offer is it would be really great to be able to see my HP when using a healing item in the menu, as I found myself switching back and forth to see if I needed another potion or if a tonic would just do.

It is a bit difficult, in the beginning and I found myself going through healing items like crazy! But, I did enjoy the challenge.

The graphics are super nice, I love that there are no random battles, and certainly fits its namesake quite well!

It's just after midnight here so I'll crash for the night, but am planning on restarting and trying to get past Mr. Dragon when I'm on here next!

Of course I remember you, Rysen! Thanks so much for stopping by and trying it out!

I've just uploaded a new version... I think it'll make your save at the boss fight work again. Let me know!

Yep whatever you did, did the trick! I enjoyed the ending haha!

I'm actually working on something in good ol' V3 right now with a friend of mine from work....I'm surprised I still remember anything or how to use it, but it always seemed like the only engine I was ever any good at.

Anyway, glad to see you're still active in game dev. :)

Really good game! Would love to see this expanded on the humor was done great and the game had a really good feel to it.

Only had a few small bugs I encountered:

  • Chat log sometimes flickers while scrolling, happens at game start and on level ups
  • Framerate stutter when moving diagonally on world map
  • Can't battle some of the ghosts in the castle (not sure if intentional?)

Also I'm definitely interested in your engine if you ever make it available publicly!

Thanks for giving it a try! For the first two bugs, any chance you could tell me what sort of specs your machine has? As for the ghosts, yes, some of them are intentionally non-violent. Sorry for the confusion. :)

(1 edit)

Windows 10 64-bit, i7 3820 @ 3.6Ghz, 16GB RAM, HD 7970 3GB

Ran the game in windowed mode with desktop resolution at 1920x1080 on a 144hz monitor.

Hmmm. Okay, I have some suspicions I can look into. Thanks for the report!
